What is Ocean Mapping?
Ocean mapping is the process of exploring and charting the seafloor and underwater features of the Earth’s oceans. Despite covering more than 70% of the planet, a large portion of the ocean remains unexplored. Ocean mapping helps scientists understand underwater landscapes, including mountains, valleys, trenches, and volcanoes.
Modern ocean mapping relies on advanced technologies such as sonar systems, satellites, and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Sonar, or sound navigation and ranging, uses sound waves to measure the depth and shape of the ocean floor. These sound waves travel through water, bounce off the seabed, and return to the sensor, allowing scientists to create detailed maps.
Satellites also play a role by measuring slight changes in sea surface height caused by underwater features. Although less detailed than sonar, satellite data helps cover large areas quickly. Together, these technologies provide valuable insights into ocean structures.
